Our Story
The traditional oxcarts, or trailers, represent a cultural heritage in Costa Rica. They go back to the mid 19th century when they were used to transport coffee beans from the central valley over the mountains to Puntarenas on the Pacific coast, a journey that took 10-15 days. For many families, oxcarts were the only mean of transport and was often seen as a symbol of social status. Each region of Costa Rica had its own design which allowed the identification of the driver’s origin by looking at the painted pattern on the wheels. The oxcart soon became a source of individual pride. Costa Ricans would use the highest-quality woods and the most delightful painting, vibrant colors, and decorations to build distinguished oxcarts that make the best sounds, a unique chime produced as the cart bumped along.
Those coffee oxcarts, or coffee trailers, held one of the most authentic and vibrant flavored coffee beans in the world.
I still remember the first time I experienced the authentic taste of coffee… No cream, no milk, no sugar, just coffee…It was nothing like the coffee I've tasted before. It wasn’t bitter. It wasn’t burnt. It was astonishingly fruity, bringing the natural flavor of a coffee bean, coming from a ripe cherry of a coffee tree in Costa Rica, expertly roasted, freshly ground, and admirably brewed. It made me wonder if coffee beans from other regions tasted differently. I was determined to seek the answer from coffee farms across the world. The result was amazing! Each harvest had its own distinguished flavors reflecting the nature of the soil, weather condition, and the extra care taken by the farmers. Some of those coffee beans had floral notes, others tasted spicy. I was driven into a new coffee world. One that I had never experienced before. It was then that I decided to pass on this experience to every coffee enthusiast and carry our Coffee Trailers, from coffee farms all the way to you.
